1-10-19 issue of BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine: It is known that colds, allergic rhinitis, pneumonia, and asthma are common respiratory diseases rampant in humans, and cause pulmonary inflammation. Dr. Han and other researchers from Seoul, Korea and New Orleans, Louisiana collated 5 major herbs that are used against inflammatory diseases, and used them in subjects with acute lung inflammation. The herbs induced the expression of Nrf2-dependent genes and suppressed the inflammatory genes, which then reduced the inflammation and significantly decreased the chance of death.  They concluded that anti-inflammatory herbal remedies could suppress severe lung inflammation because of their role in activating the Nrf-2 pathway. The herbs are Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, Magnolieae Flosis, Xanthii Fructus, Herba Asari, and Caryphyli Flos. PMC6327592
1-9-2019 issue of Nature Communications: It is well-known that microbiota in the gut are important digestion. Dr. Singh and other researchers from Louisville, KY, Toledo, OH, and Bangladre, Karnakata, India have recently discovered why. They used a major microbial metabolite (urolithin A) derived from berries and pomegranate fruits (which displays anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-aging activities) and found that it significantly enhances gut barrier function and inhibits unwarranted inflammation. The reason it did this is because it activated the Nrf2 pathway to upregulate epithelial tight junction proteins, which improved the gut barrier. 11-22-18 issue of Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity: It is known that increased cell senescence starts the process of aging and aging-related diseases. Researchers in the UK and Qatar have found that Sulforaphane (a component in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower) actually delays the aging process by activating the Nrf2 protein in the body. Usually as people get older, there is an increased rate of glucose metabolism, which increases mitochondrial dysfunction and overwhelms defenses against free radicals, leading to oxidative damage to the cells. But Nrf2 activation by Sulforaphane delayed this from happening, decreasing damage to cell proteins and DNA. Glucose entry into cells slowed, as well as other functions that contributed to senescence. Their conclusion is that compounds that counteract cell damage will have health benefits and longevity.
